What are the topics and techniques covered in Histopathologic Techniques Gregorios Ebook?

Histopathologic Techniques Gregorios Ebook covers a wide range of topics and techniques related to histopathology. It is divided into 14 chapters, each focusing on a specific aspect of histopathology. The chapters are:

  • Laboratory Risk Management and Safety in the Laboratory. This chapter discusses the importance of instrumentation, quality control and safety precautions in the histopathology laboratory. It also covers the principles of laboratory accreditation and certification.

  • Tissue Collection and Fixation. This chapter explains the methods and techniques of tissue collection and fixation, such as biopsy, autopsy, surgical specimen, and frozen section. It also describes the types and effects of fixatives, such as formalin, alcohol, and glutaraldehyde.

  • Tissue Processing. This chapter describes the steps and techniques of tissue processing, such as dehydration, clearing, infiltration, embedding, and sectioning. It also discusses the use of microwave as a non-chemical way of tissue stabilization and fixation, and rapid tissue processing.

  • Histologic Staining. This chapter covers the principles and techniques of histologic staining, such as hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), Masson's trichrome, silver impregnation, and Congo red. It also explains the mechanisms and effects of staining agents, such as dyes, mordants, and differentiators.

  • Histochemistry. This chapter introduces the concept and applications of histochemistry, which is the study of chemical reactions in tissues. It covers the techniques of enzyme histochemistry, such as alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, succinic dehydrogenase, and cytochrome oxidase. It also covers the techniques of carbohydrate histochemistry, such as PAS, alcian blue, colloidal iron, and lectin.

  • Immunohistochemistry. This chapter provides a brief course in immunology, covering topics such as antigens, antibodies, antigen-antibody reactions, and immunoglobulins. It also explains the principles and techniques of immunohistochemistry, which is the use of antibodies to detect specific antigens in tissues. It covers the methods of antigen retrieval, blocking, labeling, detection, and visualization.

  • Molecular Techniques. This chapter introduces the concept and applications of molecular techniques in histopathology, such as in-situ hybridization (ISH) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). ISH is a technique that uses probes to detect specific nucleic acids in tissues. PCR is a technique that amplifies specific DNA sequences in tissues.

  • Cytology. This chapter discusses the methods and techniques of cytology, which is the study of individual cells or cell clusters. It covers the types and sources of cytologic specimens, such as exfoliative cytology (e.g., Pap smear), fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), and fluid cytology (e.g., pleural fluid). It also covers the techniques of cytologic preparation, staining, and interpretation.

  • Quality Control in Histopathology Laboratory. This chapter emphasizes the importance of quality control in histopathology laboratory to ensure accuracy and reliability of results. It covers the sources and types of errors in histopathology laboratory, such as pre-analytical errors (e.g., specimen identification), analytical errors (e.g., staining variation), and post-analytical errors (e.g., reporting delay). It also covers the methods and tools of quality control in histopathology laboratory, such as standard operating procedures (SOPs), internal quality control (IQC), external quality assessment (EQA), proficiency testing (PT), and quality indicators (QIs).

Archival Material: Storage Retrieval & Disposal. This chapter discusses the methods and techniques of archival material management in histopathology laboratory. Archival material refers to the tissue blocks, slides, reports, and records that are stored for future reference or research purposes. This chapter covers the factors affecting archival material storage, such as temperature,

humidity, light exposure, pests, and disasters. It also covers the methods of archival material retrieval,

such as barcode system, computerized system,

and manual system. It also covers the methods

of archival material disposal,

such as incineration,

shredding,

  • and recycling.
