Code coverage is a useful tool to help developers find what lines of code are run. It works by keeping track of code that is run at execution time, either during a test run in a CI/CD or even in a production environment. This means that after a test suite is executed, code coverage reporters will output the lines of code that were not run as well as a percentage of lines of code run over the total number of lines in a codebase. For example, a test that only touches 6 out of 10 lines of code in a codebase will have a code coverage percentage of 60%.


In this article, we will discuss instances when reaching 100% code coverage is not worthwhile. Instead, a value around 80% is a much better target. We will also talk about how you can use Codecov to help focus your efforts on the parts of your codebase that matter.


In a perfect world, 100% code coverage should be a requirement. It seems obvious that every single line of code should be covered by a test. More testing should lead to fewer bugs in production. But the reality is that getting to 100% is not often easy nor is it cheap.


At some point, you might end up with a lot of tests like that above. But an organization might look at its code coverage percentage and be proud of the 100% coverage. However, as time goes on, the engineering team gets more and more bugs filed against code, and the management team wonders why this is happening if they are testing the entire codebase. A team will become disheartened and deem code coverage useless.


You can use Codecov to automatically set up coverage gates on your entire codebase. By setting the target of your coverage to automatic, it will force PRs to increase the overall coverage of a codebase. You can insert the following snippet into a codecov.yml configuration file or learn more about project status checks.


The Codecov patch check is used to measure the coverage of lines of code changed in a code change. Setting this to 100% ensures that all new code is fully covered with tests. You can do this in the codecov.yml configuration file


The fileviewer can be found in the dashboard of a repository. It clearly denotes files and directories that are not well covered with tests. Using this view can help direct a team to focus on pieces of the codebase that have the lowest test coverage.

Code coverage is a remarkably simple metric. Take the number of lines of code that have unit tests associated, divide by the total number of lines of code and multiply by 100. Of course, in practice, systems that measure code coverage are clever enough to ignore non-functional code such as boilerplate, comments, etc. But essentially, code coverage just checks that you have created at least one test for each function within your code.


Code coverage is a unit testing term that defines the amount of code for which unit tests have been written. In other words, code coverage measures how much of the code in your application has been executed when you run unit tests.


Code often has bugs, so you write unit tests to find those mistakes and fix them before customers find them. For example, if a unit test runs on 10% of the code it should run, 90% of the untested code can potentially have bugs.


Code coverage is necessary because it lets developers know what parts of their code are covered with tests. Coverage reports come in handy when the developer uses code coverage to estimate which parts still need to be unit-tested. Another benefit is that you have more confidence in changing the code that has full code coverage.


Code coverage measures how effectively automated tests are testing code. There is no set rule on how much unit test code needs to cover production code. Some experts recommend up to 100%. The problem with this approach is that unit tests can be very time-consuming once you pass a certain threshold, say 70%.


Introducing additional levels of abstraction can introduce complexity. We all love adding interfaces to our code. But that new complexity can slow you down in the future. In addition, to make a single change, you often need to modify several files. That kind of modification is also known as shotgun surgery.


The ideal code coverage is the desired percentage of unit tests for your source code. This can depend on how much unit testing has been done and what unit testing needs to be done. A good rule of thumb for unit test coverage is to determine what level of coverage should be achieved before determining any other factors.


The first step you can take is to write good tests. When a test case fails, it should be easy to know which code caused the failure. Unit tests should be as small as possible without jeopardizing their utility. In other words, unit tests should have a single purpose and focus on a single unit-tested block of code. For example, unit tests for function Foo() should only deal with function Foo() and not deal with any other code that might be required.


Unit tests only test one unit of code at a time, but the production code interacts with many other coding units. For example, you might have page controllers, model layers, views, configurations, and more in your application. Unit tests are often not sufficiently good at catching bugs or errors in these other areas. Because of this limitation in focus and execution, unit testing does not always give you the complete picture of how your code will work in a deployed application.


As I explained at the beginning of the article, high code coverage is a by-product of a clean, maintained, and tested code. As such, the percentage varies depending on the complexity or requirements of each project.


The goal of tests is to ensure that the code works as expected, not to increase the coverage. If you're not testing the business logic, you're not testing the code. Many projects have to meet certain coverage thresholds, which might make sense if you see it as an enforcement tool to ensure tests are written, but it doesn't have to be the goal or the only thing that matters.


Those reports should be used instead as a metric to indicate which parts of the code might need more testing. Once identified, forget about the % and write robust tests on the business logic, including possible edge cases.


It could very well be that a part of the code runs, but there are no assertions to cover the result, which means you get 100% coverage and 0% confidence. What you actually want is to get out the most confidence from the fewest tests possible, so don't test what is a) already known to work (e.g. that an event triggers a handler, you already know that) and b) irrelevant to the outcome of your use case.


Agree with this. However, it usually turns into a excuse to write untested code either by bypassing TDD or just out of laziness. Testing 100% of behaviours (as opposed to just lines of code) should be the goal. You don't need to gest getters (they'll be tested indirectly when testing other code anyway), but pushing untested code branches is not cool. I'd say 95% of the time, this argument turns into a excuse to not be professional, even if the underlying principle is true.


Test coverage on its own is not a good tool or metric. Using it as part of TDD would allow an engineer to write better code and forces them to think about edge cases. It's the process not the goal of covering with tests.


I worked on a big project that was at 73% code coverage with unit tests. Us devs were very happy with that. There were some folks (not devs) who were using the code coverage as a metric, and wanted it to be higher.


The value of doing test-driven development is that the unit tests are a forcing function to make the code follow most of the SOLID principles. It makes the code avoid hidden dependencies, and instead use dependency injection or parameter passing. It makes the code more robust, more malleable, reduces accidental complication (one kind of technical debt), higher cohesion & lower coupling. Highly coupled code is not unit testable code.


The tertiary value of TDD is that, as an artifact, there is a test suite that should pass 100% of the time reliably, and run very quickly (a few seconds). Which ensures basic correctness of the code. And if it doesn't pass there is either regression, or a non-regression bug in the code, or some of the tests in the test suite no longer jibe with the code (a bug in the tests).


Tests are good, but cover only what is needed. I've seen some people bend the code completely out of shape for the sake of saying that it was built with TDD. It made the code more difficult to follow, and it didn't actually test the scenario properly.


The same thing is in software. Even with every line of code covered, there are ways to break almost any software there is. That is because it would be impossible to test every way code could be used. As the author said, test coverage is a tool, but it should never be the goal. 59ce067264
